Denfeld High School Football Season Preview
By Louie St. George III
Frank Huie’s 2012 return to the Duluth Denfeld sideline was unceremonious.
Huie, a Denfeld assistant for 23 years and a head coach for five before Chris Vold took the Hunter reins following the consolidation of three public high schools to two, was greeted with a young roster and an unforgiving schedule a year ago. The result was a winless fall in which Denfeld was outscored 389-56 in nine games.
Stability — stemming from a full year of indoctrinating the Hunters to his system — plus a return to Class AAAA has Huie expecting a renaissance this time around.
“We’re all together for over a year now,” said Huie, whose team plays in the Mississippi 8 Conference. “We had basically three guys returning with any experience (in 2012). This year we should have at least 26 kids that got some kind of time, and probably at least eight starters on each side of the ball that are returning. And our schedule has lightened up a little bit … so all that should contribute to us being improved this year.” |
