Birney Quick retrospective in Grand Marais
The Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery is hosting an exhibition of work by a prolific painter with local ties.
The Birney Quick retrospective “A Quick Reflection” opened in July and runs through Sept. 7 in Grand Marais.
Quick was born in Proctor and grew up in Duluth. He founded the Grand Marais Art Colony while working at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
In a News Tribune review of the show “Birney Quick: A Lifetime of Art,” which was held during the art colony’s 50th anniversary in 1997, the reviewer said: “Quick works in everything from over-the-top amused surrealism … to fairly conventional washy watercolors to intense Fauvish thorny landscapes.
“This can make his work appear less ‘serious’ than some, but this impression would be mistaken. Quick’s work is engaged, complex, full of wonderful drawing, witty, well imagined.”
