James Podemski
Jim Podemski lettered in football three years at Denfeld and was
an All-conference tackle in 1934 and '35. The 1935 team was considered
by long-time coach Walt Hunting to be the school's all-time best.
the team went 8-0, outscoring opponents, 250-12, claiming its third
unofficial state championship.
Podemski also played basketball and track at Denfeld.
He attended Duluth Junior College, earning letters
for two seasons in football, basketball and track. He went on to
Iowa State Teachers College and was selected “Little All-American.”
He’d received an offer to try out with the Chicago Bears,
butinstead took care of his ailing parents.
As a marine lieutenant, he was awarded the Silver
Star for bravery in World War II on Jan. 14, 1944. His citation
reads: “For fearlessly leading his men against devastating
machinegun fire ... his brilliant leadership, valiant fighting spirit,
and unwavering devotion to duty contributed materially to the defeat
of the Japanese in this battle.”
