High school hockey
season is here
By Matt Suoja
Last year’s high school hockey season ended
with a clash of local titans in the Class A State Championship game
— Hermantown and Marshall.
Even though Hermantown won the game, Marshall
always has this season to get payback (Jan. 3 they face each other
once again).
The Northland boy’s hockey season is about
to begin, with many teams hoping to change last year’s fortune.
Even with the loss of six
strong players, Hunters assistant coach Bryan Lent believes the
team will be strong once again (they finished last season with a
18-8-1 record).
“We’re expecting to be a contender
with every team,” Lent said. “We’re a 20-win hockey
team.”
Even though the Hunters lost players Aaron Kolquist,
Ryan Kent, Alex Bushey, Ian Jensen, Luke Davis and Jack St. John-Stebe
to graduation, the team has many returning players who hope to make
an impact.
Some of the returning players this season include:
Jake Johnson, senior, forward; Chris Stafne, senior, forward; Codie
Hotchkin, junior, forward; Trent Johnson, senior, defenseman and
senior defenseman Max Skarman.
“We continued to beef up our schedule,”
Lent said. “Our conference is tough.”
Denfeld’s first home game of the season
will be against Hermantown at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29 at the DECC.
