Denfeld takes opener from Hermantown

Duluth Denfeld’s Luke Jazdzewski and Brendan Lawler each missed huge chunks of their junior football seasons with injuries and medical maladies, but the Hunters welcomed the halfbacks’ return Friday night in an 18-14 season-opening victory over Hermantown at Corey Veech Field.

Jazdzewski rushed for 115 yards on 23 carries and Lawler ran for two scores as the Hunters edged the Hawks in a high school nonconference opener.

Jazdzewski sat out much of last season with a variety of ailments including West Nile virus, bronchitis, mononucleosis, tonsillitis and appendicitis, while Lawler suffered from a broken thumb.

C.J. Ham added a third rushing touchdown for Denfeld, while Marc Niemi rushed for 67 yards and scored a TD.

It marked the Hunters’ second straight close victory over the Hawks and ended their seven-game losing streak since that 14-13 win a year ago.
