Denfeld takes opener
Duluth Denfeld’s Luke Jazdzewski and Brendan
Lawler each missed huge chunks of their junior football seasons
with injuries and medical maladies, but the Hunters welcomed the
halfbacks’ return Friday night in an 18-14 season-opening
victory over Hermantown at Corey Veech Field.
Jazdzewski rushed for 115 yards on 23 carries
and Lawler ran for two scores as the Hunters edged the Hawks in
a high school nonconference opener.
Jazdzewski sat out much of last season with a
variety of ailments including West Nile virus, bronchitis, mononucleosis,
tonsillitis and appendicitis, while Lawler suffered from a broken
C.J. Ham added a third rushing touchdown for Denfeld,
while Marc Niemi rushed for 67 yards and scored a TD.
It marked the Hunters’ second straight close
victory over the Hawks and ended their seven-game losing streak
since that 14-13 win a year ago.
