Former Bulldog Bob Boyat dies

Former Minnesota Duluth hockey player and coach Robert “Harvey” Boyat of Duluth died Thursday at University Hospital in Minneapolis. He was 80.

Boyat, a 1948 Duluth Denfeld graduate, was a UMD defenseman from 1948-50 and 1953-54. He coached the Bulldogs for one season, in 1954-55, with the team placing second in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. After graduating from UMD and receiving a Master of Science in Education degree, he taught in the Duluth Public School system for many years, retiring as Stowe Elementary principal in 1990.

Boyat is survived by his wife of 53 years, MaryAnn, daughters Stephine and Angela, and sons Robert, Grant and Kyle, and eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Sunday with a 6 p.m. Pomen Service at Hegstrom Family Funeral Home. Funeral services are 1 p.m. Monday at St. George Serbian Orthodox Church.
